VISHAL S SHIRBHATE
PRINCIPAL SCIENTIST

Mr. Vishal Shirbhate is an experienced researcher with a demonstrated history of working in the aeronautics research/design industry. He holds a Master’s degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Anna University, Chennai, T.N. and a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Amravati University, Maharashtra. He has worked at the CFD group at Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), Trivandrum, ISRO as an intern trainee and thereafter joined the Computational & Theoretical Fluid Dynamics (CTFD) Division as a Scientist at CSIR-NAL in March 2008. His research interests include transonic aerodynamic flows, transonic buffet characteristics, applied computational aerodynamics (CAd), preliminary civil aircraft design and its performance studies using CFD methods. He was a core team member of National Civil Aircraft Development (NCAD) Programme, a design agency under High Powered Committee (HPC) constituent by Govt. of India in 2010-11 for managing and evolving the development of 70/90 seat civil transport aircraft. He was also a part of the core team developing turbo-prop version of civil transport aircraft and during that time he has co-ordinated the CFD related design activities with the various CFD organizations within the country. On the CFD computations front, he has worked on various pax. variants of civil aircrafts ranging from 50-70-90 to 150 seat class of aircraft.

Current Status:

Currently, he is involved in the aero-mechanical clearance of IAF’s Mirage-2000 fighter jet programme under ‘Make In India’ initiative. The computations have been performed for Stability and Control (S & C) clearance and clearance is given based on CFD results alone, the first of its kind of work in the country. He is also working on NAL’s light transport aircraft ‘SARAS’ on the aerodynamic characterization using CFD as a design tool.
