Dr. T. N. Venkatesh obtained his B. Tech degree from I.I.T. Madras (1991) and Masters degree (1993) as well as Ph. D (2003) from the Aerospace Engg. Dept., I.I.Sc Bangalore. He joined NAL in 1993 and was a key member of the Flosolver group founded by Dr. U. N. Sinha. He is currently a Chief Scientist of the CTFD division, heading the Aerospace Weather Research Group. His interests include vortex dynamics, tropical cyclones, monsoon simulation and forecasts, aviation weather phenomena, propeller simulations, urban CFD, parallel computing and scientific visualization. The numerical techniques he has worked on include: vortex methods, global spectral modelling, incompressible and compressible flow solvers, coupling of fluid dynamics codes, wavelet transforms. He has about 50 publications in international refereed journals and conferences in addition to numerous invited lectures.
His acheivements include being one of the main developers of the Varsha atmospheric model, (he holds the copyright to the C and multi-precision versions), coupling of fluid dynamic codes at various scales to provide a platform for multi-scale atmopsheric – building simulations, development of the hybrid (Fourier-wavelet, Spherical Harmonic-wavelet) spectral transform, handling the parallelization projects at Flosolver from private industries, leading development of the methodology for incorporation of propeller effects in full-aircraft RANS simulations. He has worked on diverse areas of computational physics, ranging from numerical modelling of glacier dynamics to simulation of droplets in a spray.
He is a reviewer for several international journals including Applied Mathematical Modelling, Current Science, Journal of Applied Meteorology and Climatology, Journal of Atmospheric and Solar-Terrestrial Physics, Journal of Earth Systems Science. He is a member of the Aeronautical Society of India and has been awarded the Sabita Chaudhuri Memorial medal in 1993 for the best ME student, Aerospace Department, IISc, NAL outstanding peformance award in Design, Development and Project Execution in 2000 and best paper award ICOMEC 2012.
His personal interests include reading science fiction, solving puzzles such as sudokus, crosswords and various types of Rubik cubes. He enjoys listening to various genres of music.
