SOUMENDU JANA
HEAD

Soumendu Jana graduated from Mechanical Engineering Department, Jadavpur University, Calcutta (1989) and an alumni of Mechanical Engg Department of IIT Kharagpur (MTech 1992, PhD 1998). He joined as scientist to the Propulsion Division of CSIR-NAL in February 1998.

At present, he is working as the scientist-in-charge of the National Test Facility for Rolling Element Bearings in Propulsion Division of CSIR-NAL. His area of research work involves rotor-dynamics, conventional bearings, vibration and external dampers for rotating systems, magnetic bearings, aero-engine health monitoring system, etc. He has designed and developed active magnetic bearings (thrust & radial) for a 100 kg vertical rotor for a sodium pump prototype at IGCAR, Kalpakkam. His research group is actively involved in experimental performance evaluation of aero-engine bearings under various operating conditions of unbalance & transient loads, oil interruption, oil contamination under sponsored projects.

He has worked towards developing a smart rotor support system during postdoctoral research at the School of Engineering, University of Wales, Swansea, UK under a bilateral exchange programme between the Royal Society, London and INSA, India. He has two Indian patent application to his credit. He has published 14 journal papers, over 45 international & national conference papers and over 25 project documents during his professional carrier. Dr. Soumendu Jana has been member of various learned body such as, Bureau of Indian Standard (Mechanical Vibration & Shock Sectional Committee, MED-28), Tribology Society of India, Aeronautical Society of India, Institute of Smart Structures and Systems (ISSS, IISc, India). He has been awarded National Design Award in Mechanical Engineering for the Year 2013 by National Design Research Forum of the Institution of Engineers, India besides two awards from CSIR-NAL for excellence in ‘Design & Development’. He has delivered several invited lectures at various technical forums and educational institutes.

His research team currently involved in the development of aero-engine simulation model as a part of life extension programme sponsored by DMRL-DRDO for legacy aircraft engines. He is currently leading a programme to develop high speed active magnetic bearings within the country.
