STAGE SEPARATION STUDIES

Stage Separation Studies

Performance of multistage rockets critically depends on the time delay between the jettisoning of the lower stage and ignition of the upper stage to avoid aerodynamic interference. Wind tunnel simulation studies are mandatory to understand the complex interference flow field in the region between two separating stages. Proper simulation is accomplished by reproducing the flight speed, attitude and jet flow. Measurement of surface pressure supported by schlieren pictures provides data for arriving at the optimum distance of separation and hence time delay for ignition of the advancing stage.
