Dr. Hema Singh

Designation:    Senior Principal Scientist & Associate Professor (AcSIR)

Dr. Hema Singh is working as Senior Principal Scientist in Centre for Electromagnetics, National Aerospace Laboratories (CSIR-NAL), Bangalore, India. She is also holding a position of Associate Professor of the AcSIR academy in the Faculty of Engineering Sciences since 2009.

Her focus area of research is indigenous development of stealth technology, one of the critical challenges in the country’s self-reliance in strategic sector. These activities include indigenous development of stealth technology based on Active RCS reduction, Radar Absorbing Structures (RAS), Radar Cross Section (RCS) estimation and control, low RCS phased arrays, plasma-based RCS reduction, antenna-radome interactions, pattern synthesis, adaptive array processing, which is one of the critical challenges in the country’s self-reliance in strategic sector. Other contributions of Dr. Singh includes EM analysis of propagation in an indoor environment for Boeing USA, HIS-based phased array design, RCS estimation of electrically large structures, and conformal arrays. She has authored 15 books, 2 book chapters, 1 patent (files), and 7 software copyrights in these research areas. She has total of 22 years of work experience in academic and R&D organizations.

She received Ph.D. degree in Electronics Engineering from IIT-BHU, Varanasi India in Feb. 2000. For the period 1999-2001, she was Lecturer in Physics at P.G. College, Kashipur, Uttaranchal, India. She was a Lecturer in EEE of Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS), Pilani, Rajasthan, India, for the period 2001-2004. She joined CSIR-NAL as Scientist in January 2005.

She has received IEEE Women Technologist of Year 2020 by IEEE Bangalore chapter. She also got IETE-Smt Ranjana Pal Memorial Award-2018 in the novel area of Active RCS reduction, by indigenously developing an efficient adaptive algorithm. She was awarded Best Woman Scientist in CSIR-NAL in 2008. She is Senior IEEE member. She has been Asia representative in IEEE-Industry Initiative Committee (2012-2015), IET, IETE, Indian Society for Advancement of Material and Process Engineering (ISAMPE), and Aeronautical Society of India. Presently she is a panel member of Project Guidance cum Review Committee (PGRC) of Common Research & Technology Development Hub (CRTDH) at Indian Institute of Technology-Roorkee, Uttarakhand in the sector of New Materials under the BIRD-CRF scheme of DSIR. She is also an expert member (RCS reduction) in review committee of Radar cross section prediction and measurement of SWiFT UAV by ADE, Bangalore (since 2018 till date). She is an expert member in review committee of Active Antenna Array Measurement Centre at Chitradurga, ADE. (since 2018 till date)

Her other leadership qualities include Treasurer position in Indian Society for Advancement of Materials and Processing Engineering (ISAMPE) for the period of 2016-2020. She has been actively involved in sponsored projects of defence sector (DRDO) and international collaborative projects (Boeing USA). She has handled sponsored projects as Principal Investigator and Co-investigator. She had been member of various committees such as Management Council of CSIR-NAL, Library Advisory Committee, Divisional Scientific Committee of CEM, Divisional Advisory Committee, Recruitment Committee of CSIR-NAL and DRDO-LRDE, Purchase Committee of CSIR-NAL, etc. She has been part of organizing committees of International/national Conferences (IEEE-InCAP2021, IEEE WAMS-2021, IEEE-CONECCT 2020, IEEE-InCAP 2018, INDICON 2016, etc.). She has been guiding and training continuously graduate and post-graduate students from Science and Engineering background.
